A Micro yacht among Mega Yachts

Mega yachts in Falmouth Harbor

Upon returning to Antigua from Barbuda we found ourselves surrounded by mega yachts.  We happened to be in Falmouth Harbor at a time when mega yacht charters all gather to show themselves.

There is a subculture of folks who seek jobs on these monster yachts.  From chatting with some of the folks they tell me they work all the time and try not to be seen.  Sailing is great on the few sailboats but for all the Mega yachts, most of the time is at anchor or at a dock.  During that time polishing and cleaning from stem to stern is the rule.

George and I met a nice woman in Barbuda who works for one of the big charter companies.  She showed us around.  The yacht had the feel of a posh Manhattan apartment.  There was a TV in every room and every room had a name (named after painters such as Van Gogh, Renoir etc).

After getting a nice tour, George and I thought it wasn’t the sort of place where we’d want to spend much time.

  1. Hello Bob, I don't know if you will go as far as Bonaire, but if you do get there I urge you to examine sites to the north of Karpata, notably Playa Frans (north of the tank farm) and farther. We noted a sharp gradient of increasing coral cover and other signs of reef health in October. Also do your have a window yet for your visit to St. Croix? Glad to see you are going well. All the best, John (& Nancy)
